What is a Proxy Site and Why are They Used?

Proxy allow you to surf the net privately, hide your ip, hide your online history and protect your identity online. Basically a web proxy is a piece of software that allows you to browse behind the protection of a different IP, encoded and often encrypted pages. Your IP is basically your address wherever you are browsing - such as at school, work or at home. So this site hides your ip so those trying to filter or block see our IP not yours.

There are several types of proxy sites, briefly they are a) web proxies like this one that work on a browser and hide your ip. There are lots about and are usually free to use, b) proxy software - usually subscription based that change your browsers settings c) proxy networks like TOR which use several layers of encrytion d) open proxies which once again require changes to your browser settings - they tend to use hacked computers.
